The Still Life
In this 3D rendering, I wanted to explore the "still life" feeling through different textures and light setups. Originally modeled in 3Ds Max and textured in Substance Painter, this was a really fun project to explore!
I spent quite a long time looking through old Renaissance still-life paintings to get the correct vibe and then worked on my composition. I wanted to create a feeling that perhaps there was more to the story than just this still life.
When I look at different environments or 3D art, I love it when I can look and figure out the story behind it.
When I was 13, my mother sent me to art classes. I’d be in a group of 10 kids with two instructors who would set up these still-life arrangements for us to paint. While the first one or two were fun, I missed the story in them or at least something to make sense of why we were capturing this moment as a painting. What was so special about it that we all had to paint it? What happened before this moment?
In the case of my render, it culminated in the inclusion of spider webs. I wanted the viewer to wonder, is it real fruit? If so, why are there so many spiderwebs? Perhaps they are actually plastic and have been standing there for a while?
I plan to make it a series of still lifes with some strange elements in them.
