Exploring the ISS in 3D
During the COVID lockdown, one of my goals was to learn how to create better 3D environments. It all started with the International Space Station (ISS). I discovered the ISS online tour and began exploring the station. I realized I loved all the little details—wires, decals, and intricate machinery. I even started reading about all the machines there!
So, I decided to create a 3D rendering of the ISS using 3Ds Max and V-Ray. It's not to scale, but I learned a ton from this project! I spent hours modeling the various modules, adding intricate details, and experimenting with lighting and textures to make it as realistic as possible.
One day, I plan to go back to this project, move everything to Cinema 4D, and complete the entire ISS. While working on this, I came up with an idea for a short CGI movie. In this movie, something happens off-screen, and you follow a bunny plushie that floats slowly through the ISS, out the open airlock, and ends up exploring the solar system. I envision this plushie drifting past planets, through asteroid fields, and maybe even encountering a comet. Hopefully, one day I can bring this idea to life in Unreal Engine.
Working on this project was a fantastic learning experience. I became more comfortable with the tools and techniques needed to create detailed 3D environments. I also realized the importance of storytelling in my work. This project inspired me to think more creatively about the narratives behind the environments I create.
For now, I'm really happy with how this project turned out. It was a great learning experience, and I can't wait to tackle more projects like this in the future. I'm excited to continue improving my skills and exploring new ideas in 3D art.
While working on my portfolio in 2024, I decided to update some of the 3D environments I’ve done since I have moved to using Cinema 4D and Redshift instead of 3Ds Max and V-Ray. The first update is this ISS render. I reused some of my textures, most of which are procedural textures made in Redshift!
